One of the most fundamental hiring strategies for diversity is to actively source candidates from underrepresented groups. To me, this means not just relying on the same old job boards and networks but venturing into new territories. Seek out partnerships with organisations and associations that represent the communities you’re trying to reach. Attend events and conferences that focus on diversity and inclusion. You’ll be amazed at the wealth of talent you can uncover when you step out of your comfort zone.

But attracting candidates is just the first step. Interviewing techniques play a pivotal role in promoting inclusivity. It’s not enough to simply bring diverse candidates in; you need to make them feel valued and respected during the interview process. To do this, I recommend crafting your interview questions in a way that assesses a candidate’s skills and abilities rather than making assumptions based on their background. Be mindful of unconscious biases and ensure your interview panel is diverse as well. This fosters a more inclusive atmosphere and can help candidates be themselves.

Additionally, I’ve seen great success in implementing skills tests and scenarios in the interview process. This not only provides candidates with an opportunity to showcase their capabilities, but it also levels the playing field, as everyone is evaluated based on their performance in a standardised task.

Inclusive hiring practices are about creating a workplace where everyone feels welcome and valued. By proactively seeking candidates from underrepresented groups and adopting interviewing techniques that promote inclusivity, you’ll not only attract a diverse pool of candidates but also build a stronger, more innovative, and inclusive team.
